October Studies 05: Obscura
05 · Obscura explores depth through repetition. A sequence of monumental arches recedes into darkness, each frame narrowing the field of view until only a distant point of orange remains. The architecture becomes both passage and optical instrument, directing attention toward something visible but never fully reachable.
October Studies is a six-piece architectural art series from Cole Design Works exploring mass, shadow, material, scale, and atmosphere at the darker edge of architectural composition.
Rather than relying on conventional Halloween imagery, each study interprets October through monumental geometry, restrained color, texture, light, and spatial tension.
Each work stands independently while forming part of a connected six-study sequence.

05 · Obscura is built around repetition.
Layer after layer of weathered arches establishes a deep architectural sequence, compressing perspective as the space recedes. Each opening becomes smaller and darker until the composition terminates in a single restrained orange point.
The repeated geometry creates both rhythm and uncertainty. The architecture appears ordered and precise, yet the destination remains unresolved.
The effect is less like moving through a conventional corridor and more like looking through an instrument designed to concentrate vision itself.

Perspective is one of architecture's simplest ways of producing depth.
Repeat an opening.
Reduce its scale.
Let each frame reveal another.
Eventually architecture becomes less about the objects themselves and more about what they force you to look toward.
That became Obscura.
Repetition
Study 05 is constructed from a procession of repeated arches.
The first is monumental.
The next is smaller.
Then smaller again.
The sequence continues until the geometry begins to collapse into darkness.
Each arch acts simultaneously as structure and frame.
Each opening contains another opening.
The Distant Point
At the center of the composition is a single orange point.
It is deliberately small.
Almost everything else in the work is black, gray, stone, and shadow, so that small interruption becomes disproportionately important.
The entire architecture seems organized around it.
Yet its meaning remains unresolved.
Signal.
Light.
Destination.
Or simply the last visible thing.
Artist Statement
I wanted Obscura to feel like architecture that had become an optical device.
The arches don't simply create a corridor.
They direct attention.
Every layer reduces the field of view until almost nothing remains except the point at the center.
That changed the question behind the piece.
Instead of asking where the space leads, I became more interested in why the architecture insists that we look there.
