October Studies 04: Residual Light
04 · Residual Light explores architecture at the edge of disappearance. A tall, weathered structure holds a narrow chamber of orange illumination while its adjoining mass dissolves gradually into darkness. The composition asks whether the light is revealing the architecture or simply recording what remains of it.
October Studies is a six-piece architectural art series from Cole Design Works exploring mass, shadow, material, scale, and atmosphere at the darker edge of architectural composition.
Rather than relying on conventional Halloween imagery, each study interprets October through monumental geometry, restrained color, texture, light, and spatial tension.
Each work stands independently while forming part of a connected six-study sequence.

04 · Residual Light centers on a narrow vertical architecture illuminated from within.
Weathered planes rise from a sequence of shallow steps while a concentrated orange chamber cuts through the otherwise near-black composition. Along one side, material loses its solidity and gradually dissolves into darkness.
The distinction between structure, shadow, and residue becomes increasingly uncertain.
Rather than depicting ruin directly, Residual Light focuses on what survives: an edge, a surface, an opening, and a final source of illumination.

October Studies 04 // Residual Light
Architecture usually announces its presence through mass.
Walls define space.
Edges define form.
Material establishes permanence.
Residual Light begins when those certainties start disappearing.
What Remains
Study 04 centers on a narrow vertical structure rising from darkness.
A tall illuminated chamber runs through its upper portion, casting the only concentrated orange color in the composition.
One side remains architectural and legible.
The other begins to dissolve.
Material fragments become increasingly disconnected until the boundary between structure and darkness becomes difficult to locate.
Light as Evidence
The orange opening does not illuminate the entire composition.
It remains contained.
That restraint makes it feel less like a conventional light source and more like evidence that something continues to exist inside the structure.
The architecture may be fading.
The light persists.
Artist Statement
I was interested in making a piece about architectural disappearance without depicting a literal ruin.
Instead of showing collapse, I allowed the material itself to lose definition.
The building doesn't fall apart.
It simply becomes less certain.
The orange opening remains almost untouched, which gradually shifted the meaning of the composition for me.
The study became less about disappearing architecture and more about the persistence of something within it.

Each uses the same restrained material and color language while approaching October through a different architectural proposition.
