02 · Concrete Moon places monumental architecture against an equally monumental celestial form. A pale, weathered disk rises behind fractured black masses while a narrow vertical line of orange light cuts through the composition. Architecture and moon become almost interchangeable: one rendered as silhouette, the other as material.
October Studies is a six-piece architectural art series from Cole Design Works exploring mass, shadow, material, scale, and atmosphere at the darker edge of architectural composition.
Rather than relying on conventional Halloween imagery, each study interprets October through monumental geometry, restrained color, texture, light, and spatial tension.
Each work stands independently while forming part of a connected six-study sequence.

The moon is normally represented as light.
For Concrete Moon, I wanted it to feel heavy.
Almost architectural.
Concrete Moon
Study 02 begins with one of the simplest geometries available: a circle.
Placed behind fractured architectural masses, however, that circle becomes difficult to read purely as a celestial object.
Its textured surface suggests concrete, aged plaster, stone, or some impossible cast material.
The moon has acquired weight.
Geometry Against Geometry
The composition works through a deliberate collision of forms.
The moon is complete, smooth, and circular.
The architecture in front of it is fractured, angular, vertical, and incomplete.
One is continuous.
The other is assembled.
A narrow orange opening interrupts the dark architecture, introducing just enough warmth to destabilize an otherwise restrained black-and-bone palette.
Artist Statement
I was interested in reversing the usual relationship between architecture and sky.
Architecture is typically understood as the solid object, while the moon remains distant, luminous, and intangible.
Here, I wanted the moon to feel almost heavier than the buildings.
Its texture makes it material.
The architecture becomes silhouette.
That inversion became the study.

Concrete Moon is the second of six connected works exploring October through architecture rather than conventional seasonal imagery.
The collection uses mass, texture, geometry, darkness, and restrained color to create atmosphere without relying on familiar Halloween symbols.
