October Studies 03: Dead Grid
03 · Dead Grid explores architecture after order begins to fail. A disciplined field of lines, modules, voids, and textured surfaces is interrupted by missing geometry, fractured material, and a concentrated field of orange. What begins as a rational grid gradually becomes unstable, leaving traces of a system that no longer fully explains itself.
October Studies is a six-piece architectural art series from Cole Design Works exploring mass, shadow, material, scale, and atmosphere at the darker edge of architectural composition.
Rather than relying on conventional Halloween imagery, each study interprets October through monumental geometry, restrained color, texture, light, and spatial tension.
Each work stands independently while forming part of a connected six-study sequence.

03 · Dead Grid begins with a rational architectural device: the grid.
Lines establish alignment. Rectangular fields suggest structure, elevation, diagram, and construction logic. Then that order begins to fail.
Dark material fills some modules while others disappear into void. Weathered surfaces interrupt clean geometry. A concentrated orange field breaks through the monochrome composition, bleeding beyond the boundaries that should contain it.
The result sits between architectural drawing and damaged artifact.

October Studies 03 // Dead Grid
Architecture depends on systems.
Axes.
Modules.
Lines.
Grids.
They allow complexity to be organized and relationships to be understood.
Dead Grid begins with that order and then asks what remains when the system stops behaving.
The Grid
Study 03 is constructed around a field of fine architectural lines.
They imply alignment, dimension, structure, and control.
Some define clear rectangular modules.
Others continue into darkness without resolving anything at all.
The grid is still present, but its usefulness has become uncertain.
Material Interruptions
Within that framework, fields of textured black, gray, and concrete-like material appear as fragments rather than complete objects.
Some align perfectly.
Others vanish into the background.
Edges deteriorate.
Void becomes as important as material.
Then orange enters the composition.
Unlike the disciplined geometry surrounding it, the color refuses to remain completely contained. Its edge breaks apart and disperses into the adjacent field.
Artist Statement
I use grids constantly in architectural work because they make complicated things understandable.
For Dead Grid, I was interested in reversing that relationship.
The grid is still there, but it no longer provides certainty.
Some information aligns.
Some disappears.
Some appears damaged or incomplete.
The drawing begins to feel less like documentation and more like evidence.
That ambiguity became the study.
Part of October Studies
Dead Grid is Study 03 of six.
Where Threshold explored passage and Concrete Moon explored monumental mass, Dead Grid turns toward architecture as system.
Together, the three begin establishing a wider language for October Studies: space, object, drawing, material, darkness, and restrained light.
