October Studies 01: Threshold | Cole Design Works
01 · Threshold explores the point where mass becomes passage. Monumental textured planes frame a narrow opening filled with concentrated orange light, while a solitary human figure establishes the immense scale of the imagined architecture.
Deep negative space, weathered material texture, and restrained orange illumination create a composition that feels simultaneously architectural and otherworldly.
October Studies is a six-piece architectural art series from Cole Design Works exploring mass, shadow, material, scale, and atmosphere at the darker edge of architectural composition.
Rather than relying on conventional Halloween imagery, each study interprets October through monumental geometry, restrained color, texture, light, and spatial tension.
Each work stands independently while forming part of a connected six-study sequence.

October Studies 01 // Threshold
October is usually represented through objects.
Pumpkins. Skeletons. Leaves. Symbols.
For October Studies, I wanted to approach the season differently.
The series begins with architecture.
Threshold
The first study is built around one of architecture's most fundamental conditions: the transition between one space and another.
Two monumental forms create a narrow passage.
Their surfaces feel heavy and weathered. Almost everything recedes into black and charcoal, leaving the opening itself filled with a restrained field of orange illumination.
Only after noticing the solitary figure does the scale become clear.
What initially appears almost abstract suddenly becomes architecture.
Material and Light
The composition relies heavily on materiality.
The massive planes suggest weathered concrete or carved stone rather than polished digital surfaces. Fine texture catches just enough light to reveal their depth while allowing most of the composition to remain submerged in shadow.
Orange is deliberately concentrated rather than distributed throughout the image.
The color belongs to the opening.
That makes light itself part of the architecture.
Artist Statement
I wanted the first October Study to establish the language for the entire series.
The goal was never to create conventional Halloween artwork. I was more interested in the feelings architecture can produce using scale, darkness, enclosure, texture, and uncertainty.
Threshold begins at the boundary between two spaces.
What exists beyond it is left unresolved.
Two Ways to Collect
Threshold is available in two formats.
The 4 × 6 art card turns the work into a small collectible object suitable for desks, shelves, compact framing, or ultimately displaying all six October Studies together.
The 8 × 12 poster allows the architectural scale and material detail of the composition to take on greater presence as wall art.
Six Architectural Studies. One October.
Threshold is Study 01 of six.
Each upcoming work will explore a different architectural condition while maintaining the material, atmospheric, and graphic language of the larger collection.
